Wipro Salary Hikes

Wipro Salary Hikes
Wipro has just handed out salary increments to all its employees. With effect from February 1, employees will get a pay hike in the 8% to 12% range with some even getting a 15% increase. Such a hike comes after a long dark tunnel — of 12 to 18 months — when employees went through a difficult period of layoffs, uncertainty, additional work loads, and salary freeze.
A couple of mid-tier Wipro executives said the hike is a morale booster. "I was seriously exploring a job change. Now that I'm getting a hike close to 15%, I guess I should stay back," a senior project manager said.
Infosys had given a single-digit increment in October. It had announced an across-the-board raise and promotions with effect from October 1, 2009. Domestic salaries went up by 8% while onsite pay rose by 2%. "During the October-December quarter, our variable pay has been 100%, against 92% in the previous quarter. We'll be thinking of a further salary hike only in April 2010," said its HR head T V Mohandas Pai.

Corporate business Tax Benefits

Corporate business Tax Benefits
Authority for Advance Ruling (AAR) held that restructuring of businesses cannot be construed as an exercise for avoiding tax in India.
AAR, a quasi judicial body for settling tax disputes involving foreign entities, in an order last week on an application filed by the Star Group companies, held that any tax benefit resulting from the restructuring of businesses cannot be a ground for income-tax (I-T) authorities to conclude that the entire exercise was for avoiding tax.
The parties that applied before AAR were Star Television Entertainment (STEL), the entity which owns Star Plus TV channel, and Star Asian Movies (SAML), which owns Star Gold, and Star Asia Region, the owners of Star Utsav and Star One. While STEL and SAML are based in British Virgin Islands, Star Asia Region is based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). These three companies have been amalgamated with the Indian company Star India with effect from April 1, 2009.
The AAR, however, observed that since the amalgamation includes taking over all assets and liabilities, which also included tax recoverable, tax avoidance cannot be seen as the objective of the Star Group. Besides, the department is proposing to intervene in the matter in the high court, it is free to request for appropriate direction for recovery of the I-T arrears. Thanks Economic Times

Zombieland Movie Review

Zombieland Movie Review
Hero, a nerdish loner (played by Jesse Eisenberg) appears to be the only survivor on his campus, thus prompting him to set off towards home, when he meets an unhinged, whiskey-swiveling zombie-killer (played by Woody Harrelson) with whom he takes a cross-country road-trip. Along the way, this oddball duo is outsmarted and subsequently befriended by a pair of survivor siblings (played by Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin) who join them on their adventure, splattering zombies with guns, baseball bats and pretty much anything sharp or strong that's handy.
Unpredictable and packed with clever one-liners, Zombieland works as an amusing buddy movie thanks to some sparkling chemistry between the two guys. Sure there's lots of blood-splattered action too, but the tone's more comic than gruesome. There's also a surprise cameo by a well-known actor who plays himself in the film, and that catches you completely off-guard. Thanks IBN

RBI CRR Hike

The Reserve Bank of India on Friday increased mandatory cash reserve of banks held by it by 75 basis points in a bid to suck excess Monetary PolicyHowever, short-term lending and borrowing rates between RBI and banks were kept unchanged, leading to speculation that banks' commercial lending rates may not change.
The apex bank also upped its economic growth projection to 7.5 per cent from its earlier estimate of 6 per cent for the current fiscal.
The 75-basis point increase in cash reserve ratio to 5.75 per cent is expected to suck out at least Rs 36,000 crore from the system. The move is to check food inflation spreading to other sectors.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said the CRR would be increased by 50 basis points from February 13 and a further 25 basis points to 5.75 percent from February 27.
According to RBI estimate, inflation is likely to touch 8.5 per cent by this fiscal-end from over 7 per cent in December. Earlier in October, the apex had projected the rate of price rise to be at 6.5 per cent by March-end.

Veer Movie Review

Veer Movie Review
Set in the late 19th century - although dates in no way correspond with costumes, language or even age and appearance of actors - this Anil Sharma-directed clunker is the story of a Rajputana warrior clan, the Pindharis, who swear revenge on the King of Madhavgarh (played by Jackie Shroff) after he joins hands with the British and cheats the Pindharis of their land and deceitfully slaughters their men.

The film's director, Anil Sharma, may have touched a chord with a similarly jingoistic approach in his Sunny Deol-starrer Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, but in Veer the chest-thumping melodrama appears mechanical and excessive. The film's action is visceral with several blood-splattered slaughter scenes, but often runs the risk of coming off as ridiculous. Thanks IBN

Safari
The large Multi-Touch screen on iPad lets you see web pages as they were meant to be seen — one page at a time. With vibrant color and sharp text. So whether you’re looking at a page in portrait or landscape, you can see everything at a size that’s actually readable. And with iPad, navigating the web has never been easier or more intuitive. Because you use the most natural pointing device there is: your finger. Scroll through a page just by flicking your finger up or down on the screen. Or pinch to zoom in or out on a photo. There’s also a thumbnail view that shows all your open pages in a grid, to let you quickly move from one page to the next.
Mail
See and touch your email in ways you never could before. In landscape, you get a split-screen view showing both an opened email and the messages in your inbox. To see the opened email by itself, turn iPad to portrait, and the email automatically rotates and fills the screen. No matter which orientation you use, you can scroll through your mail, compose a new email using the large, onscreen keyboard, or delete messages with nothing more than a tap and a flick. If someone emails you a photo, you can see it right in the message. You can also save the photos in an email directly to the built-in Photos app. And iPad works with all the most popular email providers, including MobileMe, Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, Hotmail, and AOL.
Photos
With its crisp, vibrant display and unique software features, iPad is an extraordinary way to enjoy and share your photos. For example, the Photos app displays the photos in an album as though they were in a stack. Just tap the stack, and the whole album opens up. From there, you can flip through your pictures, zoom in or out, or watch a slideshow. You can even use your iPad as a beautiful digital photo frame while it’s is docked or charging. And there are lots of ways to import photos: You can sync them from your computer, download them from an email, or import them directly from your camera using the optional Camera Connection Kit.
Star Trek is available on iTunes.
Video
The large, high-resolution screen makes iPad perfect for watching any kind of video: from HD movies and TV shows to podcasts and music videos. Switch between widescreen and full screen with a double-tap. Because iPad is essentially one big screen, with no distracting keypad or buttons, you feel completely immersed in whatever you’re watching. YouTubeThe YouTube app organizes videos so they’re easy to see and navigate. To watch one, just tap it. When you’re watching in landscape, the video automatically plays in full screen. And with its high-resolution display, iPad makes the latest HD YouTube videos look positively amazing. iPodWith the iPod app, all your music is literally at your fingertips. Browse by album, song, artist, or genre with a simple flick. To play a song, just tap it. iPad even displays album art at full size. Choose from thousands of movies and TV shows (in both standard and high definition), along with thousands of podcasts and millions of songs. Preview songs before you buy them. Or just sync iPad with the content you already have in your iTunes library on your Mac or PC. App StoreiPad runs almost 140,000 apps from the App Store. Everything from games to business apps and more. And new apps designed specially for iPad are highlighted, so you can easily find the ones that take full advantage of its features. Just tap the App Store icon on the screen to browse, buy, and download apps wirelessly, right to the iPad.
iBooks
The iBooks app is a great new way to read and buy books.* Download the free app from the App Store and buy everything from classics to best sellers from the built-in iBookstore. Once you’ve bought a book, it’s displayed on your Bookshelf. Just tap it to start reading. The high-resolution, LED-backlit screen displays everything in sharp, rich color, so it’s easy to read, even in low light. MapsSee more of the world with high-resolution satellite and street view images. Even see topography with the new terrain view. You can also search for a nearby business type (“Restaurant,” for example), then tap the business to see the route and directions from your current location. NotesWith its expansive display and large, onscreen keyboard, iPad makes jotting down notes easy. In landscape view, you see not only a note-taking page but a list of all your notes. iPad even circles the current note in red, so you can see where you are at a glance. Calendar
iPad makes it easy to stay on schedule by displaying day, week, month, or list views of your calendar. You can see an overview of a whole month or the details of a single day. iPad even shows multiple calendars at once, so you can manage work and family schedules at the same time. ContactsThe Contacts app on iPad makes finding names, numbers, and other important information quicker and easier than ever before. A new view lets you see both your complete contacts list and a single contact simultaneously. Need directions? Tap an address inside a contact and iPad automatically opens Maps. Home ScreenThe Home Screen gives you one-tap access to everything on iPad. You can customize your Home Screen by adding your favorite apps and websites or using your own photos as the background. And you can move apps around to arrange them in any order you want.

Hand sanitiser To Fright flu

Hand sanitiser To Fright flu
Face masks and regular use of alcohol-based hand sanitiser cut down the risk of getting flu-like illness. During the current H1N1 epidemic, vaccines were slow to arrive and use of antiviral drugs was limited. To investigate what measures might be most effective in preventing spread of the flu, researchers from Michigan divided 1,437 college students into three groups; the first group was made to wear face masks and use hand-sanitizers, the second group used only face masks and the third group served as the “control” group. The reserachers studied the participants for six weeks but continued to enroll the participants for the first two weeks.
During the initial fortnight , there was no difference in the incidence of flu-like illness among the three groups; likely as the flu season was just beginning. But in the last couple of weeks, it was found that college students who wore the face masks for a few hours a day and used alcohol-based hand sanitiser regularly cut their risk of coming down with flu-like illness. Students using face masks and hand sanitiser were 35 percent to 51 percent less likely to develop flu-like illness than students in the control group. While the face mask-only group were also less likely to catch flu-like illness than the control group, the difference wasn't statistically significant.
The researchers concluded that non-drug interventions like hand hygiene and face masks are likely to be important in fighting any flu pandemic.thanks IBN

India win Test series against Bangladesh

India win by 10 wickets and win the test series 2-0

Zaheer Khan is the Man of the Match as well as the Man of the series, for picking up 15 wickets in the series, ending up as the highest wicket taker in the series.
Sachin Tendulkar collects a special memento for becoming the 1st cricketer to cross 13,000 runs in Tests.

Zaheer had previously taken 2 wickets in 2 balls twice in his career. The others to do it are Ravi Shastri, Kapil Dev and Anil Kumble. Only Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan have a Test hat-trick to their name.

Things looked hunky dory for Bangladesh until Zaheer struck late on day 3 to remove Siddique and Iqbal in successive overs. Ashraful and Shahadat got through the first hour unscathed but once Shahadat fell, Bangladesh collapsed like a house on fire. The spinners chipped in with 3 wickets before Zaheer finished it all off. With his devastating spell with the old ball, he bowled a 3-wicket maiden before getting rid of the last man after lunch to finish with his first 10-wicket haul. For Bangladesh, its been a familiar story. They were in a position of strength but threw it all away as they failed to capitalise, losing 7 wickets for 22 runs this morning to hand India an easy win.

11 Digit Mobile Number in India

Industry war between incumbent GSM operators and Reliance and Tatas over the DoT's decision to implement 11-digit numbers by adding an extra 9 to all mobile numbers in the country by January 1 2010. COAI while AUSPI, which primarily represents the interests of Tatas, Reliance and Sistema, is in favour of moving to a 11-digit numbering plan. AUSPI thinks that a 11 digit numbering plan will open up opportunities to migrate subscribers from the incumbent operators networks since a mandated change in numbering plan could also be accompanied by a relatively easier decision to change network. With contradicting views on an issue which impacts consumers, it is unclear whether the DoT will be able to proceed at the same pace as it desires. At this time, it seems that the political leadership and the bureaucracy is backing a 11-digit mobile numbering plan to be launched as early as January 2010.:source:infotech:IT:

Virgin Media Piracy-detection software

Virgin’s plans have angered privacy advocates, who claim it is only a matter of time before the company is routinely fingering its own customers.Virgin and Detica insist that DPI is — for now — being used only to measure the level of illegal filesharing, not to snoop on customers. Indeed, they say the key piece of information — the IP address — is ignored in the process. Virgin Media is trying out new technology that can automatically detect if a customer’s broadband connection is being used to download copyrighted files illegally. Virgin, which has more than 4m UK broadband customers, offers the fastest connection speeds in Britain and is consequently a popular ISP for filesharers. Hit films such as Pirates of the Caribbean can be downloaded by Virgin users in minutes. For the anti-piracy lobby, the verdict has been a serious setback, not least because it suggests the law hasn’t kept up with technology that allows the copying and transfer of copyrighted material.:source:TO
